Over 3.6 million Australians ride recreationally or as a sport and that number is set to grow to as much as 8 million by 2016 (source Australian Cycling Participation Survey 2013, Australian Bicycle Council). The State of Australian Cities Report 2013 claims that bicycle use had reached its highest level in 40 years and is changing the way Australian cities are designed.
Faced with this explosive growth and the fact that while an average bicycle costs $300-$1,000, there are some people spending up to $15,000 on a bicycle. Hollard Insurance in partnership with Velosure recognised the need five years ago for people to insure their bicycle and offered stand-alone insurance to bicycle owners.
